The Danish photographer, Søren Solkær is best known for his distinctive portraits of some of the world’s most famous musicians. He is most recognised as the man responsible for various iconic images of U2, REM, Björk, The White Stripes, Franz Ferdinand, David Lynch and The Arctic Monkeys.

Soren has just launched a series of international exhibitions and an accompanying large format book of portraits of street artists from 13 countries across the globe over a three year period.

Aptly titled SURFACE, the project has consumed a large part of his recent working life. It all began in Melbourne after a chance meeting at the Melbourne Art Fair: “I felt that this was the perfect time to portray the people behind one of the most powerful and prevalent art movements of our time.” Says Soren.

“This took me on an incredible journey to roof tops, back alleys, train stations, studios and walls across the world.”

“The last few months I’ve hit the streets, subways and back alleys of Berlin and Stavanger. I’ve had the privilege of working with artists such as Vhils, Dal East, Strök, Faith47, C215, Victor Ash, Czarnobyl, Ernest Zacharevic and more.“

SURFACE is the result of a three-year journey photographing in Berlin, London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Stavanger, Athens, Sydney, Melbourne and Copenhagen. In 2015 the project will be exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne, L.A., New York, Copenhagen and Vancouver.

Søren’s photography is characterised by finding a tension point between intimacy and edginess. His portraits are often regarded as cinematic in tone with a distinctive colour palette.

Søren has released three fine art photography books: Beat City (2006), CLOSER (2011) and Souls (2011). They are available in the web shop as well as in stores world wide.

Søren’s works have been exhibited in New York, Oxford, Copenhagen, Sydney, Melbourne, London, Edinburgh, Chicago, Milano, Napoli, Bratislava, Reykjavik, Cologne and Prague and are featured as part of the permanent collection in The Royal Danish Library and The National Portrait Collection in Frederiksborg Castle, Denmark.
